Choosing a wall tiler

Wall tiles are seen close up and at eye level, so straight, level lines and consistent grout joints are what separate a professional job from a DIY one. The setting out is everything: a skilled tiler works out the layout so that cut tiles fall in the least visible places and full tiles frame the shower niche, window or vanity. Feature walls with large-format or patterned tiles need especially careful planning.

On wet-area walls, such as a shower, the same waterproofing rules apply as for the floor, and the membrane should be carried up the walls to the required height under the standard AS 3740. Tiles alone are not waterproof, and the grout between them is not either, so the membrane behind them is what keeps water out of the wall. Ask how the tiler handles corners, the niche and the junction with the floor.

Heavy tiles and large formats need the right adhesive and technique so they do not slump or come away from the wall, which is why full adhesive coverage on the back of the tile matters. A tiler who talks about back-buttering and solid bedding on a wall is one who plans for the tiles to stay put.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wall Tiling

Yes. The walls of a shower are a wet area and must be waterproofed to the height required by the standard AS 3740 before tiling. Tiles and grout are not a waterproof barrier on their own, so the membrane behind them protects the wall framing. This is one of the most important parts of a bathroom job.

In dry areas, tiles can go over sound plasterboard or render with the right preparation, but wet areas need water-resistant sheeting and waterproofing first. Glossy painted surfaces usually need to be prepared so the adhesive can grip. A tiler will check the wall and tell you what it needs.

With the right adhesive, full coverage on the back of the tile and, on big formats, levelling clips and sometimes temporary support while the adhesive sets. Back-buttering, where adhesive is spread on the tile as well as the wall, helps heavy tiles bond fully. Rushing this is how tiles end up drummy or crooked.

A good tiler sets out the wall so full tiles sit in the most visible positions and any cuts fall in corners, at the floor or behind fittings. Symmetry around a window, niche or vanity is a sign of careful setting out. This planning happens before any tile is stuck to the wall.
